From her svelte figure to her bright smile, one look at Generation T honouree Patricia Gouw and you would think that she has a lot to boast about. Yet in this interview, the highly coveted model and TV host gets real about the things that riddle her life, including the story of how she discovered bravery in times of self-doubt. How did you start your modelling career? It all began when I was 16 when my friend urged me to join a modelling competition at a nearby school.
I went to tourism school, so it was compulsory for us to wear heels. Ever since, I joined several more competitions and pageants including Miss Indonesia and Miss ASEAN. And what about Asia’s Next Top Model (AsNTM)? After the first season, my friends insisted that I should try AsNTM out, particularly one colleague at the insurance company I was working at. I actually made audition tapes to apply, but I never sent them. Why was that? I didn’t have enough self-confidence or self-esteem. I only ended up auditioning just so that my friends would stop pestering me about it.
So I abandoned my bridesmaids’ duty, with my friend’s blessing, of course, and walked into the casting. Shockingly, I got chosen as one of Indonesia’s representatvies, and the next thing I knew, I was sent to Singapore. What was that experience like? AsNTM opened a lot of doors for me. Coming from a family that knew nothing of the entertainment world, I never thought I’d be able to work full-time as a model and host. What was even more surprising was people’s fondness for my boisterous personality. I thought it was something I needed to work on, but maybe it’s not.
