This book is written for students who take Prose subject at the university level. The prose is a compulsory subject for students who study English. This course is intended to enable the students to value literary works and cultivate their love to read for enjoyment and understanding. It is written for a one-semester course (approximately 16 meetings) with 100 minutes of practice and lectures for each meeting. The content helps students learn how to value literary works and read for comprehension through the analysis of its intrinsic elements. Many of the short stories chosen iniv this book are written by famous writers such as HC Andersen, Mackinlay Kantor, Edgar Allan Poe, O Henry, Guy de Maupassant, Isaac Asimov, Oscar Wilde, and Richard Cornell. We believe that the selected fiction can enhance the students’ vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking with themes ranging from marriage, love, life, friendship. Some materials are from various sources, including the internet, acknowledged by the links written in each part.

A good literary work presents the beauty of form and the beauty of meaning. The presence of the beauty aspect should be balanced with the useful aspect. Prioritizing the aesthetic aspect alone will distance literature from its readers. On the other hand, prioritizing the benefits element alone will eliminate the essence of literary works as an art form. The aspect of benefit in literary works is related to the disclosure of social inequalities, the disclosure of the problems of human life with the complexity of the challenges, and the disclosure of life values.

In the beginning, literary works are created to enjoy their beauty. However, it is undeniable that literary works are also a cultural product. As a cultural product, literary works are developed by following the wisdom of the times, so that over time, literature also develops its function. Literary work, which was originally written just for entertainment, by and by gives meaning to those who read them. Literary works become meaningful because their content has a lot of contact with social life as there are many reflections of life values within it. Social reality ultimately gives colour to the process of creating a literary work. This textbook entitled ‘Into the Mind’ directs learning by providing a complete understanding of the two aspects of literature, which are enjoyment and understanding of life.
