Danny Masrin left Sentosa Golf Club with a broad smile and buckets of confidence. His result at the US$1 million SMBC Singapore Open on January 18-21 exceeded his expectations. Danny finished T12 on a total of 5-under, just nine strokes behind the winner, Sergio Garcia. "I just want to perform consistently. Never expect anything," said Danny.
Finishing the first round on even-par 71, Danny’s simple aim was to make the cut. Opening up his second round with two birdies, Danny was in the zone. He added a further two birdies on the 6th and 13th, then capped off his bogey-free round with a final birdie on the 18th. His position flew up to T8 with a total of 5-under, just two strokes behind the leader Chapchai Nirat.
Over the third round, Danny continued his strong campaign by sinking five birdies to compensate for his minor stumble on the opening hole where he made bogey.
“For me, to make an under-par score like 66 and 67 is amazing. However, this exceeds my expectation by a lot. I never thought I would be in contention,” explained Danny. He was firmly in contention: sat in T4 position on 9-under, Danny was only two strokes behind the leader Garcia. The chance to make history was palpable.
Heading out for his surely nervewracking final round, Danny made a birdie on the 2nd, however, the next hole resulted in a double bogey. He bounced back with a birdie on the 4th but followed it with another bogey on the 5th. On the 7th, Danny made a triple bogey after landing his ball in the water twice from the tee. His total score was 5-under after the first nine.
