A Casebook in Business Management: Indonesian Traditional Herbal Industry provides materials to support the application of case-based method in classes. It is applicable for undergraduate and master’s students focusing on management studies. The cases discuss myriads of topics that require in-depth analysis based on human resource management, strategic management, operations management, and financial management concepts. The cases are divided into several themes including organizational behavior, strategic management, supply chain management, financial management, quality management, and product diversification. To analyze the cases presented in this book, students may employ numerous tools such as Fishbone diagram, SWOT Analysis, PEST Analysis, IFAS and EFAS Analysis, Porter’s Five Forces, and many others.

There are eight cases in this book. The first case discusses the succession planning in herbal medicine (jamu) industry. The second case talks about the traditional cosmetics industry in Indonesia that uses one of the benefits of jamu for beauty purpose. The third case discusses the defensive strategy implemented by herbal medicine companies and several cases on strategies to manage and preserve herbal medicine (jamu) industry. The last case discusses the financial management of a herbal medicine (jamu) company.

A Casebook in Business Management: Indonesian Traditional Herbal Industry provides materials to support the application of case-based method in classes. It is applicable for undergraduate and master’s students focusing on management studies. A Casebook in Business Management: Indonesian Traditional Herbal Industry, The Rise of Traditional Medicine in Indonesia
Indonesian traditional herbal, known as Jamu, is traditional herbal medicine that is made of herbs, spices, and other natural ingredients and still regularly consumed by Indonesians as a natural remedy drink to maintain health and cure various diseases. Indonesia has natural biological resources consisting of so many medicinal plants. The tradition of drinking jamu has been practised since Mataram Kingdom era and still being practised until now.

Because its advantages for health and massive use of it, many jamu companies try to adapt to technological developments from time to time that clearly is showed by jamu transformation from a traditional liquid to the forms of pill, tablet, liquid with modern packaging, and instant powder that people can find easily now. Jamu industry places Indonesia become the fourth largest producer of herbal medicine after China, India, and Korea. This book, regularly, discuss about the development of Jamu business in Indonesia and how the producen or companies develop a strategies about the business.


Penulis

Sinto Sunaryo - Author is a researcher and Senior Lecturer (faculty member) in the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), Indonesia. She received her Ph.D. from Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia. She has research interests in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management. Dr. Sinto teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. She is a member of the Asian Academy of Management (2021–2023) and a senior researcher at the Local Wisdom Research Group in Universitas Sebelas Maret.
Irwan Trinugroho - Author is a full professor of finance at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), Indonesia. He is also the Director of Partnership, Development, and International of UNS, the Chairman of the Center of Fintech and Banking UNS, and Vice- Chair for Program and International Affairs of the Indonesian Finance Association (IFA). Irwan was the UNS best lecturer in 2015 and 2018 and the finalist for national best lecturer in 2018.
Joko Suyono - Author is a researcher and Senior Lecturer (faculty member) in the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), Indonesia. He has served as Chairman of the Local Wisdom Research Group at UNS since 2021 and served as Head of Human Resource Development and Remuneration Department at UNS in 2018–2019. He earned his Ph.D. in Management at Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia. His areas of research interest are Leadership, Performance Management, and Compensation Management. He teaches courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Hidajat Hendarsjah - Author is a Senior Lecturer (faculty member) in the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), Indonesia. He earned his Doctorate in Strategic and Human Resources Management at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). He is also a Certified Supply Chain Manager. He teaches Behavioral Science, Strategic Human Resource Management, Operations Strategy, Supply Chain Management, and Operation Research at UNS.
Lilik Wahyudi - Author is a Senior Lecturer (faculty member) in the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), Indonesia. He completed his Ph.D. in Management at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). His main interests in research include Consumer Behaviour, Management Information Systems, and Netnography. He is the founder of Nawala-Tools for Netnography research and Watase UAKE for Systematic Literature Review. He teaches courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has published articles in various journals.
Reza Rahardian - Author is a Senior Lecturer (faculty member) in the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), Indonesia. He earned his Master of Science degree at Universitas Airlangga. He is also a Certified Supply Chain Manager. He served as Head of Undergraduate Program in Management FEB UNS in 2015-2019. Reza Rahardian mainly teaches Operations Management, Strategic Management, and Quality Management. His research interests are Operations and Strategic Management, with publications in various journals. Currently, he is helping Gilang Ramadhan Studio Band, a national private music network to develope their new traditional music program for children.
Sarwoto - Author is a lecturer in the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), Indonesia, and has served as the Secretary of the Local Wisdom Research Group in UNS since 2015. He completed his Ph.D. in Development Planning and Management at Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2022 with main research interests in Operations Management, Business Resilience, and Small and Medium Enterprises, focusing on qualitative research. Sarwoto is an active researcher. He writes numerous articles published in various journals and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Miftachul Ma’arif - Author is a lecturer in the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), Indonesia. He completed his Master of Management (MM) program at Universitas Islam Indonesia, Yogyakarta in 2016. He teaches several courses in the Management Study Program, including Operation Research, Management Information System, Information Technology Practice, and Business Communication.
Atmaji - Author is an Associate Professor and currently serves as Head of Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), Indonesia. Dr. Atmaji completed his Doctoral Program in Economics at UNS in 2018, focusing on Financial Management. Apart from serving as Head of the Management Study Program, Dr. Atmaji is also active in publishing researches in national and international journals, as well as conducting research and community service programs.
Suryandari Istiqomah - Author is a lecturer and researcher in the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), Indonesia. She earned her Master of Science (M.Sc) degree at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta in 2013. Currently, she is teaching Human Resource Management and Entrepreneurship at the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business of UNS. She mainly teaches Human Resource Management II, Human Resource Management Practice, Entrepreneurship, MSMEs and Cooperative Management, Business Feasibility Study, and serves as the Coordinator of Merdeka Belajar of Kampus Merdeka Entrepreneurship Program.
Wahyu Trinarningsih - Author is a lecturer in the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), Indonesia. She completed her Master in Management at UNS and Université de La Rochelle, France, and is now pursuing her Ph.D. in finance at the School of Business and Economics Universiti Putra Malaysia (SBE UPM). She has research interests in Finance, Banking, and Islamic Finance, with numerous articles published in various journals. Her area of expertise is financial planning, and she holds the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) certification as well as being a member of the Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB) Indonesia. In the area of capital markets, she is certified as a Registered Securities Analyst (RSA) and a member of the Indonesian Securities Analyst Association (AAEI Indonesia).
Arum Setyowati - Author is a junior lecturer in the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), Indonesia. She joins the Financial Markets and Institutions Research Group, Universitas Sebelas Maret. She completed her Masters in Management at Universitas Sebelas Maret and Universite de La Rochelle, France. She is also competent and certified as a risk management professional. She is pursuing her Ph.D. in finance at the School of Business and Economics, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Her current research interests are Finance, Sustainable Development Goals, and Risk Management.
Lilik Wahyudi - Author is a Senior Lecturer (faculty member) in the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), Indonesia.
